Smartphone penetration by age group in Australia
Australian smartphone ownership has reached record levels with nearly every age group nearing 100% penetration rates – so yes, practically every person in Australia owns a smartphone of some type. Therefore it becomes crucial for smartphone manufacturers to have great smartphone pos displays in retail stores like JB Hi Fi in order to try and attract shoppers.
GOOGLE wanted to see some clever smartphone point of sale ideas for consumer electronics stores like JB Hi Fi. The theory was that based on August 2018 data, JB Hi-Fi is ranked as the equal 7th largest consumer electronics and home appliance retailer in the world. So if they were able to come up with a smart way to present their smartphones in a retail store environment like JB Hi Fi then the ideas could be replicated in other retailers around the world.
The JB Fi Fi consumer electronics shopping environment is probably the busiest visual space of any store in Australia, especially compared to others like Officeworks, Bing Lee, Harvey Norman or The Good Guys. They have successfully used this formula to sell billions in consumer electronics products.
With such a busy point of purchase environment it means all the brands in JB Hi Fi are competing with so much other noise and therefore increases the need for clever pos displays that can fit the tight spacing of JB Hi Fi’s stores. So our design team had to keep this in mind while balancing the practical needs of the store to leave space for things like ticketing, power and security cables.
The design brief meant we needed to;
– Create a smartphone product display stand for retail
– The POS display needed to incorporate existing power & security items
– The smartphone display had to fit within the existing visual merchandising space available
– The design had to meet Nokia’s corporate identity guidelines
We had to create a POS design that would sit on the existing JB Hi Fi countertops in the mobile phone area of the store. So instead of creating a wall bay or free standing display unit we had to work in the confines of the existing space available.
Shelf display for smartphones
So the countertop shelf display we came up with was designed to not only fit the space but include security, lighting and very clean brand messaging. This enabled Nokia to help its products stand out from all the other black / charcoal smartphones on the counter top area of the store.
Not content with creating a visually pleasing space to show off their smartphones, Nokia wanted the ability to include some of its product features and benefits on the display. So we integrated a space in the design for interchangeable base plates. This gave consumers information and made it easy to update when new models were released. We also kept room for JB Hi Fi’s in-store ticketing so it made the display practical from the retailer’s point of view.
With our expertise as a point of sale design agency we were also able to add a few touches of clever industrial design with integrated lighting, security and power for the countertop smartphone display units. This helped the display ‘pop’ in the store and really show off the details of the smartphone designs.
