The material selection of a flywheel

The flywheel is mostly made of gray cast iron, and the flywheel is a disk-shaped part with a large moment of inertia, which acts like an energy memory.

The flywheel has the following structural characteristics and working principle:

In order to ensure sufficient moment of inertia and reduce the mass of the flywheel as much as possible, most of the mass of the flywheel should be concentrated on the rim, so the flywheel rim is usually made wide and thick.

② The flywheel is mostly made of gray cast iron, and when the circumference speed of the rim exceeds 50m/s, it should be made of ductile iron or cast steel with higher strength.

The outer edge of the flywheel is pressed with a tooth ring, which can be meshed with the driving gear of the starter for starting the engine. The flywheel is usually engraved with the first cylinder ignition timing mark in order to calibrate the ignition time.

The flywheel of the multi-cylinder engine should be balanced with the crankshaft, otherwise the centrifugal force generated by the mass imbalance during rotation will cause engine vibration and accelerate the wear of the main bearing. In order not to destroy their balance state during disassembly, there should be a strict relative position between the flywheel and the crankshaft, which is usually guaranteed by positioning pins or asymmetrical arrangement bolts.
