Production and Use of Ferromolybdenum

An iron alloy composed of molybdenum and iron, generally containing 50-60% molybdenum, is used as an alloy additive for steelmaking.

Ferromolybdenum smelting generally adopts the out-of-furnace method. The furnace is a cylinder placed on a sand base, lined with clay bricks, and uses ferrosilicon containing 75% silicon and a small amount of aluminum particles as reducing agents. After the charge is added to the furnace once, it is smelted by the upper ignition method. An initiator (saltpeter, aluminum chips or magnesium chips) is used on the charge surface, and it reacts violently after ignition, and then calms down, discharges slag, and dismantles the furnace.

Ferromolybdenum is an alloy of molybdenum and iron. Its main use is as an additive for the molybdenum element in steelmaking. Adding molybdenum to steel can make the steel have a uniform fine-grained structure, improve the hardenability of the steel, and help eliminate temper brittleness. Adding ferromolybdenum to cast iron can increase its strength and wear resistance.
