Hazards of common mode noise

One of the most common forms of magnetic components is the inductor. An inductor has a certain inductance value, so its impedance increases with the increase of frequency. This alone can be used as a first-order high-frequency filter. When the filtering object we are discussing changes from a single current path to two or more, we need to place at least one inductor on each path to achieve the same high-frequency filtering effect - this can be achieved by a very simple and ingenious design in actual magnetic components, which is the common-mode inductor we are going to talk about here.

So, what exactly is the problem with common-mode noise? Why does EMC testing often focus on suppressing common-mode noise in the loop?

Of course, first of all, in order to meet the EMC certification standards of various countries, the amplitude of common-mode and differential-mode signals must be limited to achieve product safety while reducing the potential harm to the power grid or neighboring equipment caused by electrical equipment on the power-consuming side.

Secondly, from the perspective of power integrity and signal integrity, most electrical equipment and electrical controllers operate at low voltage. Additional noise voltage may cause abnormal control signals or abnormal transmitted data, or even errors and downtime. These abnormal interferences may come from the circuit board or from the radio frequency interference of its noise, such as mobile device disconnection or broadcast noise howling.

Finally, since excessive common-mode noise is likely to be emitted into space in the form of high-frequency radiation, such as a larger common-mode loop, or on a conductor similar to an antenna, it is an imperceptible long-term hazard to human health.
