Filter circuit for common mode inductors

Common mode inductors, also called common mode chokes, are often used in computer switching power supplies to filter common mode electromagnetic interference signals. In board design, common mode inductors also play the role of EMI filtering, which is used to suppress the electromagnetic waves generated by high-speed signal lines from radiating outward. In the filter circuit of common mode inductors, La and Lb are common mode chokes.

These two coils are wound on the same iron core with the same number of turns and phase: they are wound in reverse. In this way, when the normal current in the circuit passes through the common mode choke, the current generates a reverse magnetic field in the same coil, which cancels each other out.

At this time, the normal signal current is mainly affected by the resistance of the coil; when the common mode choke passes through the coil, due to the isotropic nature of the common mode choke, a isotropic magnetic field will be generated in the coil, increasing the inductive reactance of the coil, making the coil appear as high impedance, producing a strong damping effect, thereby attenuating the common mode choke and achieving the purpose of filtering.

The common mode inductor is essentially a two-way filter: on the one hand, it is necessary to filter out the common mode electromagnetic interference on the signal line, and on the other hand, it is necessary to suppress itself from emitting electromagnetic interference to the outside, so as to avoid affecting the normal operation of other electronic equipment in the same electromagnetic environment.
