Definition

Common-mode inductor is an inductor device with two adjacent coils, which are wound around the same magnetic core and have the same core and winding parameters. This design gives common-mode inductors unique performance in circuits.

Characteristics

Structural features:

The two coils are symmetrically wound on the same ferrite toroidal core, and the winding directions of the coils are opposite.

This structure enables common-mode inductors to distinguish between common-mode current and differential-mode current and treat them differently.

Working principle:

When the normal current (i.e. differential-mode current) in the circuit flows through the common-mode inductor, the magnetic fields generated by the two coils will cancel each other out due to the opposite winding directions of the two coils, so the normal signal current can pass without attenuation.

When a common-mode current flows through the coil, due to the unidirectionality of the common-mode current, the magnetic fields generated in the two coils will superimpose on each other, making the coil present high impedance, thereby suppressing the common-mode current.

Impedance characteristics:

Common mode inductors have extremely high initial magnetic permeability, which is 5-20 times that of ferrites, so they have greater insertion loss and suppress conducted interference much more than ferrites.

High saturation magnetic induction intensity, 2-3 times higher than ferrites, makes it difficult to magnetize to saturation in situations with strong current interference.

Excellent temperature stability, with excellent stability, and the performance change is close to linear.
