Titanium is typically produced from rutile ore, ilmenite ore, and occasionally sphene ore. The entire titanium manufacturing process is done by the Kroll method. First, titanium chloride (IV) is heated with magnesium. This process combines titanium dioxide with chlorine to form titanium tetrachloride. Then, when the tetrachloride reacts with the magnesium, any remaining chlorine is removed. When the chlorine is removed, a pure metal called sponge is produced. This is "titanium" ready for molding and shaping for various purposes.
