In a water softener, ion exchange resin plays a crucial role in removing hardness from water. This process takes place within the built-in resin tank, where hard water flows through a bed of specialized resin beads.

These resin beads are negatively charged and attract positively charged hardness ions, primarily calcium and magnesium. As the water passes through, the hardness ions are captured by the resin, while sodium ions from the resin are released into the water. This exchange effectively replaces the hard ions with softer sodium ions, resulting in softer water.

This process is not permanent, however. Over time, the resin becomes saturated with hardness ions and needs to be regenerated. This typically involves flushing the resin tank with a brine solution, which replenishes the sodium ions and allows the resin to continue softening water effectively.
