It is commonly found in nature along with other minerals, and because of the rarity of its distribution and the difficulty of extraction, the separation and purification of scandium is a complex process. Ion exchange resin method is an effective method for extracting and concentrating scandium from solution.

Ion exchange resin is a kind of polymer material with three-dimensional network structure, which contains active groups capable of ion exchange. When a solution containing scandium ions passes through these resins, exchangeable cations on the resin (such as hydrogen ion H+ or sodium ion Na+) can be exchanged with scandium ions in the solution, thus allowing scandium ions to attach to the resin.

Scandium extracted chelating resin mainly used for the extraction of scandium from high-temperature recycled water in oil fields to achieve comprehensive resource recycling.
