Copper Sulphate crystals are blue crystals composed mainly of Copper Sulphate pentahydrate, with the molecular formula CuH10O9S, i.e., a hydrate of copper sulphate.It can be used for electroplating or colouring,and is also known as blue alum, bile alum.Physical and chemical properties of copper sulfate pentahydrate is transparent dark blue crystal or powder, yellow or green when containing impurities, no smell. This product is very corrosive to iron. Copper Sulphate is both a fertiliser and a commonly used fungicide. Bordeaux liquid, copper soap liquid, copper ammonium preparation, is made of Copper Sulphate and lime, soap, ammonium bicarbonate preparation.
Preparation of Copper Sulphate crystals
1. Place electrolytic copper (copper wire or shaved copper shavings) in a porcelain dish, add sulphuric acid and heat to 70-80°C. Add the relative density of 1.40 nitric acid in batches (watch out for sprays!) .
2. If any crystals precipitate, add water. A small amount of copper should remain when the reaction is complete. Decant the solution and evaporate until a film of crystals appears. Cool, strain out the crystals and wash with a little water.
3. Dissolve the resulting crystals in 1.5 times hot water, filter, evaporate until a crystalline film forms, and cool. Suction filter out the crystals. The obtained copper sulphate needs to be recrystallised 2-3 times to produce a chemically pure product.
