Morinda officinalis, a Chinese medicine name. It is the dried root of Morinda officinalis How, a plant of the Rubiaceae family. It can be dug up all year round, washed, the fibrous roots removed, dried in the sun until 60% to 70% dry, gently flattened, and dried in the sun. Leaves are opposite; petiole is 4-8mm long, with brown coarse hairs; blade is oblong, 3-13cm long, 1.5-5cm wide, with short acuminate tip, obtuse or rounded base, entire margin, dark green above, often with canthus color when young, and with sparse short coarse hairs; smooth and glabrous when old, with short coarse hairs along the midrib below, short eyelashes on the leaf margin, 6-7 pairs of lateral veins; stipules are membranous and sheath-like. Inflorescence is capitate, with 2-10 flowers, growing at the top of branchlets or in umbels in thermal power plants; peduncle is 3-10mm long, with dirty yellow short coarse hairs; calyx is obconical, with irregular tooth fissures at the tip; corolla is white, fleshy, up to 7mm long, the throat of the corolla tube is contracted, the inner surface is densely covered with short coarse hairs, most of them are 3-deeply split, less often 14-lobed; stamens have the same number of flower lobes. Born near the base of the corolla tube, with short filaments; the ovary is inferior, 4-chambered, with a slender style, 2-parted, hidden in the corolla. The drupe is nearly spherical, 6-11mm in diameter, and red when ripe. There are 4 seeds in the small pit, which are nearly ovate or obovate, with a raised back and flat sides, covered with short white hairs.
