Common mode inductors are also called choke coils because of filtering. This article discusses its relationship with EMC.

In switching power supply, there are two common types of noise: common mode noise and differential mode noise. Noise that is the same as the path of the input signal is called differential mode noise, while each phase of the same noise from ground to output is called common mode noise.

Common-mode inductors can suppress common-mode noise and improve signal quality by filtering. As far as power lines are concerned, common mode inductors are often used to suppress common mode noise and improve electromagnetic compatibility. For the signal line, the common-mode inductor can not only suppress the common-mode noise, but also compensate the current and reduce the input noise at the receiving end.
