Chromium iron is divided into high carbon chromium iron according to different carbon contents, including charging grade chromium iron (C ≤ 10%), medium carbon chromium iron (C ≤ 4.0%), low-carbon chromium iron (C ≤ 0.5%), and micro carbon chromium iron (C ≤ 0.15%). Commonly used materials include silicon chromium alloy and chromium iron nitride. Ferrochromium is mainly used as an alloy additive in steelmaking, and in the past, it was added during the refining stage of steelmaking. Smelting low-carbon steel grades such as stainless steel requires the use of low and micro carbon ferrochrome, which has led to significant development in refined ferrochrome production. Due to the improvement of steelmaking technology, when producing stainless steel and other steel grades using AOD method (see refining outside the furnace), carbon chromium iron (mainly charging grade chromium iron) is used to load the furnace, so only low and micro carbon chromium iron needs to be added to adjust the composition in the later stage. Therefore, the focus of chromium iron production is on refining carbon chromium iron.
Properties and Applications of Ferrochrome Alloy
Chromium iron is an important iron alloy, divided into low, medium, and high chromium iron, and high, medium, low, micro, and ultrafine carbon chromium iron. High carbon ferrochrome contains over 50% chromium and 4% -10% carbon, and is used in stainless steel, alloying agents, additives, and smelting of medium, low, and micro carbon ferrochrome. Smelting methods include blast furnace method, electric furnace method, etc., which require control of melting temperature and atmosphere.
Chromium iron is an important iron alloy, mainly composed of chromium and iron, and may also contain other elements such as carbon, silicon, manganese, vanadium, etc.
1、 Classification and properties of ferrochrome
1. Classification and carbon content
According to the chromium content, chromium iron can be divided into three varieties: low chromium iron (Cr10-30%), medium chromium iron (Cr30-50%), and high chromium iron (Cr50-70%).
According to the different carbon contents, ferrochrome can be divided into high carbon ferrochrome (with a carbon content of 4% to 10%), medium carbon ferrochrome (with a carbon content of 0.5% to 4%), low-carbon ferrochrome (with a carbon content of 0.15% to 0.50%), low-carbon ferrochrome (with a carbon content of 0.06%), and ultrafine carbon ferrochrome (with a carbon content less than 0.03%). Among them, high carbon chromium iron is also known as carbon chromium iron, and medium, low, and micro carbon chromium iron is also known as refined chromium iron.
2. Physical properties
Ferrochromium is usually gray white in color, with a glossy surface, and is relatively delicate, uniform, and dense.
The hardness of ferrochrome is 5.5-6.5, and its specific gravity (density) is 4.3-4.8. However, please note that these values may vary depending on the specific composition and preparation process of ferrochrome.
When there is an oxide layer on the surface of ferrochrome, it will appear dark gray.
3. Chemical properties
Chromium iron begins to react with oxygen at high temperatures (above 600 ℃). But once an oxide film forms on the surface of chromium, its reaction rate will slow down.
Chromium can also react with elements such as nitrogen, carbon, and sulfur at high temperatures.
Types of Ferrochromium
1. High-carbon ferrochrome
High-carbon ferrochrome is usually used as an alloying agent for ball steel (0.5%~1.45%Cr), tool steel, die steel (5%~12%Cr), and high-speed steel (3.8%~4.4%Cr), and can harden steel. Increase the wear resistance and hardness of steel.
2. Medium and low-carbon ferrochrome
Medium and low-carbon ferrochrome is used in the production of medium and low-carbon structural steel, carburizing steel, gears, high-pressure blower blades, valve plates, etc.
3. Micro-carbon ferrochrome
Micro-carbon ferrochrome is mainly used to produce stainless steel, wear-resistant steel, and heat-resistant steel.
